On December 2, 2024, the Kazakh-British Technical University (KBTU) hosted a meeting of the Industrial Committee of the School of Materials Science and Green Technologies (SMSGT), during which the Dean of the School Beisenkhanov N.B. summed up the overall academic performance and the results of the summer student practice.

Zhomart Mominbayev, Chairman of the Industrial Committee of the SMSGT KBTU, also delivered a guest lecture, telling the students about the results of the trip to COP29 in Baku and modern projects of TechnoGroupService LLP (TGS) aimed at solving environmental problems and developing domestic production. In particular, attention was paid to combating desertification of the Aral Sea and the negative impact of climate change on the Central Asian region.

The participants of the meeting had a unique opportunity to learn about how science and industry can cooperate to solve global environmental challenges. To the question of a 4th-year student Oteu Temirlan about the expediency of organizing the production of domestic equipment in the field of renewable energy, Mominbayev Zh. gave a detailed answer, gave examples of a positive impact on the economy and the need to develop domestic value in the long term. Thus, import substitution issues should be discussed not only within the walls of Parliament and Ministries, but also in schools and universities of Kazakhstan.

TGS continues to actively develop projects in the field of green technologies, providing students with the opportunity to complete an internship, gain useful knowledge and skills to work in the most sought-after and promising areas.

On November 19, 2024, at the COP29 international conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, the “Kun Bulagy” solar power plant (Kyrgyzstan) project with a capacity of 50 MW was presented as part of the Climate Project Showcase. This project is the first in Central Asia to be financed using the green bond mechanism and has been included in UNECE's global portfolio of climate initiatives.

The project was recognized for its unique contribution to the development of renewable energy and identified as a promising investment solution for advancing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). During the session organized by the High-Level Climate Champions team, with the participation of Daniel Costa and Sagarika Chatterjee, key aspects of developing and financing climate projects, including the needs of project developers and investor expectations, were discussed.

Additionally, the project was highlighted at the "Climate Solutions Investment Opportunities" session by Aruzhan Mominbayeva, a project manager at TechnoGroupService’s Center for Green Technologies. In her speech, she emphasized the role of sustainable financing in implementing large-scale environmental initiatives like “Kun Bulagy.”

The "Kun Bulagy" solar power plant will not only help reduce the carbon footprint and strengthen energy security in the region but also serve as a model for utilizing sustainable financial instruments such as green bonds. The project aims to create jobs, reduce emissions, and support local production, fully aligning with Kazakhstan's strategic sustainable development goals.

Participation in an international initiative and inclusion in UNECE's global climate portfolio underscores the project's significance for the global climate agenda. This opens up new opportunities for attracting investments and strengthening TechnoGroupService’s position as a leader in renewable energy.

On November 19, 2024, during the COP 29 conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, the Kazakhstan Pavilion hosted a session titled “Central Asia’s Path to Enhancing the Efficiency of Transboundary Water Resource Management in the Aral Sea Basin under Climate Impact.” The event brought together experts and stakeholders to discuss current solutions for water resource management in the region.

At the invitation of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFSA), Zhomart Mominbayev, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of TechnoGroupService LLP, participated as a speaker and presented the company’s flagship project, GREENAID, developed under the MacArthur Foundation’s 100&Change initiative.

The GREENAID project proposes an innovative approach to combating desertification and restoring the ecosystems of the dried Aral Sea bed. Its core concept combines saxaul afforestation with the installation of solar panels. These measures stabilize soil, reduce toxic dust storms, and create favorable conditions for plant growth. Solar panels provide energy for irrigation systems and reduce water evaporation through the shade they create.

In addition to its environmental benefits, the project supports local communities by creating jobs, engaging youth, and raising environmental awareness. The GREENAID model demonstrates significant scalability potential, including its application to the Uzbek portion of the Aral Sea Basin. The project’s long-term goals align with global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, slow glacier melting, and improve air quality.

The session concluded with participants emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts in managing water and ecological resources, as well as the critical role of partnerships between public, private, and international organizations in achieving sustainable environmental goals.

From November 11 to 22, 2024, the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 29) is taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan, bringing together world leaders, experts, and business representatives. One of the central themes of the conference is climate change education and awareness initiatives.

Aligned with this priority, on November 18, a session titled “Enhancing Climate Change Education, Awareness, and Action” was held at the Qatar Pavilion. The session featured Zhomart Mominbayev, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of TechnoGroupService LLP, as a speaker invited by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). He presented practices for integrating the company’s sustainable business strategies with climate education.

In his speech, Zh. Mominbayev emphasized that collaboration with universities and youth is not only a way to raise awareness but also a tool for engaging local communities and promoting sustainable solutions. The company actively collaborates with the Kazakh-British Technical University (KBTU), the Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Business (NU GSB), and Satbayev University.

In 2023, TGS developed an educational case study for the MBA course “Leadership and Entrepreneurship” at NU GSB, titled “TGS: in search of Blue Ocean in the renewable energy sector of Kazakhstan.” The case promotes green technologies and engages in educational initiatives, seminars, and training for different age groups.

Special attention during the speech was given to the importance of ESG initiatives and sustainable financing, which foster climate responsibility and create new opportunities for implementing educational projects. Zhomart Mominbayev highlighted that refining the GRI standard regarding Climate Change Education, Awareness, and Action will enable businesses to adapt effectively to climate challenges and become a driving force in addressing them.

Following the sessions at the Qatar Pavilion, representatives of TGS met with the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), whose mission includes strengthening local and international cooperation and partnerships to achieve greater impact. TGS and QFFD representatives agreed to continue collaboration on green technology projects and educational initiatives.
